Let me first of all, thank all the community members, who have placed their faith and trust in me by electing me as their secretary. I did not want to do the job, partly because of the very little time I have, and partly because of the tension it comes with. Anyway, I was encouraged by my wife Rama and my family to serve the community, Believe me I have no regrets at all taking this position .It is very challenging and interesting, it also has made me a lot more wiser.
I would like to thank our President, Shilaben Pankhania, our Treasurer Jaideepbhai Gajjar and our one and only advisor Dhirubhai Zina Pankhania. During our tenure, we have all been put through a magnitude of obstacles, but I am proud to say that not only have come through valiantly and more united than ever, but also that we achieved all that we had set out to do in spite of these obstacles. All these three people have been very supportive of me. They have stood by me in good times and bad times, for that I am very thankful to them. I thought being secretary would be an easy job, boy didn't I find out in a hurry how stressful it can be, [No need for stress classes yet!!].
In this past year since we have been elected, we have achieved lots of things. Our main achievements are [1] compiling a community directory for U.S.A. and Canada [2] hosting of the first ever S.S.P.G.M. Web site worldwide. [3] Raising $3000.00 for the earthquake victims in India, which put a family four in a furnished 2 bedroom house in kutch India.[4] We raised some funds for the 9/11 tragedy in New York. [5] Organized a boat party at Lake Lanier which was one big task, I would like to commend our President Shilaben Dhiru Pankhania, and of course the ladies volunteer committee, which is made up of Induben Virji Dhokia , Heenaben Ravji Pankhania and Reshmiben Aswin Manjee and also Pushpaben Mohan Pankhania for a job very well done. Our Diwali program was very successful and I would like to thank all the children, young adults and adults alike who took part in dances and the play. The plays especially, were a big hit and really embraced the qualities and the culture of our grandparents and our generation in the 70s in the U.K. and the true concept of 'arranged' marriages. The 'youth' of our community did an outstanding job, especially Minesh Ravji and Anita Ravji Pankhania and Kiran Arun and Jai Arun Fatania. Keep up the good work guys.
I would also like to praise Shilaben Dhiru Pankhania, Dhirubhai Zina Pankhania, Ravjibhai Parbat Pankhania, Rohit Pankhania and Nita Virji Dhokia and everyone else who put lots of time and effort, gathering data on community members in U.S.A and Canada , to compile our first U.S.A/Canada S.S.P.G.M Directory, thank you all very much.
On a very serious note, we were all very saddened by the 9/11 tragedy in New York City. We in the community can only pray for the victims of the 9/11. May the people who lost loved ones find peace and solace through prayers. It is very difficult to deal with life when one looses a loved one, and especially a very difficult when a loved one is taken away in a tragedy like 9/11. We as a community corralled together and immediately had Bhajans/Prayers on the same night and raised approx. $300. On this thought, I am proud to say that our community is getting stronger, growing bigger, and will support one another and help each other in sickness and health. As the saying goes "Life is too short".
One final note, since elected to date, all the things we have achieved, would not have been possible without the support and blessing of our few elders, who are my father Nathabhai Koria, Mohanlal Virjibhai Fatania, Kunwarmaa Singadia and Meenaben Gajjar. I really do appreciate them being around; they do lead us on a right path. Once again, I thank you all very much for letting me serve our little community, which grows bigger, God willing.
